Message to the Members of the Canadian Armed Forces

December 21, 2018

OTTAWA—The holiday season is a time to rejoice, to take a break, to reflect on the months that have passed, and to look ahead to the New Year. For many, it is also a time to reconnect with loved ones, but I am keenly aware that for members of the Canadian Armed Forces and of our foreign service who are on duty or posted abroad, such holiday reunions are not always possible. Those of you who serve our country in such roles – as well as your families and loved ones - make unique sacrifices for which I am very grateful.

During the past year, I have met with many of you at events here in Canada and internationally. I have sailed aboard a Canadian submarine off Esquimalt. Met with members of the Canadian Rangers in Iqaluit. Witnessed the closing of the 48th season of the Snowbirds at CFB 15 Wing Moose Jaw. Met with the crew of Squadrons 402 and 435 at CFB 17 Wing Winnipeg. Visited with troops supporting Operations UNIFIER and REASSURANCE in Ukraine and Latvia. And that’s not counting the many ceremonies where I had the chance to honour you. I also paid tribute to veterans, including in Belgium on the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War – the war that was supposed to end all wars.

Besides meeting with members of our military during the past year, I also received outstanding support from Canada’s foreign service representatives during international visits to countries in Europe, Africa and North America. Your knowledge, professionalism and dedication is truly impressive. Diplomacy is essential in our rapidly-changing, complex world, and I am truly grateful for all you do for Canada.

Members of our military and our diplomatic corps are the face of Canada abroad, and Canadians are fortunate to be represented by such talented and committed people. Your work matters and we thank you.

Best wishes for 2019 to you and your loved ones.
