 Governor General to Mark Her Majesty’s 90th Birthday

 OTTAWA—Their Excellencies the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, and Mrs. Sharon Johnston will visit Hamilton and Toronto on Wednesday, April 20, 2016. During this visit, His Excellency will mark Her Majesty The Queen’s 90th birthday, highlight the importance of higher education to students, and discuss his new book with CBC Radio’s Shelagh Rogers at the Toronto Public Library.

Address at ABACUS Celebration
Their Excellencies will attend an event at Cathy Wever School in celebration of ABACUS’ success in increasing students’ likelihood of continuing their education after high school. As part of the event, His Excellency will address a group of students who benefit from the organization’s programming. Following this, students will have an opportunity to ask him questions.

ABACUS focuses on improving the academic, community and environmental factors that most directly affect a student’s likelihood of continuing his or her education. Celebration of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s 90th Birthday
Their Excellencies will attend a celebration hosted by the Monarchist League of Canada in honour of Her Majesty’s 90th Birthday, which is April 21st. His Excellency will deliver remarks to convey best wishes to The Queen on behalf of Canadians. Afterwards, he will unveil a commemorative coin produced by the Royal Canadian Mint to mark this occasion. For more information, visit

Book Launch Event: The Idea of Canada: Letters to a Nation
His Excellency will take part in an on-stage conversation hosted by CBC Radio’s Shelagh Rogers to discuss The Idea of Canada: Letters to a Nation, his book published by Signal/McClelland & Stewart. This special event is presented by the Toronto Public Library.

In letters to characters and individuals living and dead, eminent and unknown,
The Idea of Canada: Letters to a Nation touches on a wide range of topics: learning, law and justice, kindness and courage, innovation, Aboriginal education, bilingualism, mental health, hockey and more. Presented in three parts—“What Shapes Me”, “What Consumes Me” and “What Inspires Me”—these letters are about Canada and are written to Clara Hughes, Chris Hadfield, the Aga Khan, former governors general, Canadian teachers, an Inuit boy His Excellency met in Repulse Bay, and many others.
