Governor General to Visit Washington, D.C.
OTTAWA—At the request of the Right Honourable Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada, His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, will visit Washington, D.C., on February 10 and 11, 2016. His visit to the capital is on the margins of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) conference and will aim to promote international collaboration in research and further advance the dialogue around innovation.
“Canada’s relationship with the United States and its global partners is of great importance, particularly in the realm of science and innovation, where collaboration plays such a critical role in enhancing our learning and our prosperity,” the Governor General said. “I’m delighted to go to Washington, D.C. at a time when so many of the world’s leading thinkers and entrepreneurs —including many outstanding Canadians—are gathered together in one place. I look forward to a productive visit.”
Upon his arrival, the Governor General, as commander-in-chief of Canada, will lay a wreath at the Canadian Cross of Sacrifice at the Arlington National Cemetery, to honour citizens of the U.S. who served in the Canadian Armed Forces and gave their lives in World Wars I and II, and the Korean War. Afterwards, the Governor General will meet with local Canadian and U.S. innovation and education leaders to discuss ways to increase international collaboration. The following day, His Excellency will visit 1776, a leading business incubator and accelerator with ties to Canada, to engage with young entrepreneurs who are leading promising start-ups. Later in the day, he will moderate a round-table discussion on international research collaboration with Canadian, U.S. and European Union partners present in the capital to attend the AAAS conference.
This will be His Excellency’s first visit to Washington, D.C., as governor general and demonstrates his ongoing efforts to promote Canadian collaboration, education and innovation.
A detailed itinerary will be issued at a later date.
