Official Arrival to Canada of Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal and Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence
Rideau Hall, Monday, November 10, 2014
It gives me great pleasure to welcome you both to Rideau Hall. Sharon and I are delighted to share these grounds with you, as they are symbolic of the close relationship that Canada maintains with the Crown.
Your Royal Highness, though your visit to Canada will be short, it will be extremely meaningful to Canadians. The highlight of your brief tour will be tomorrow’s Remembrance Day ceremonies, during which we will honour those who have sacrificed so much for our nation. It will also be an opportunity for us to thank members of the Canadian Armed Forces who are currently serving our country around the world.
We will be honoured to stand with you as we rededicate the National War Memorial, which was unveiled 75 years ago by your grandfather, King George VI. I think it is truly fitting that you will be able to join us for this milestone.
Canadians greatly admire the monarchy and members of the Royal Family. We have fond memories of all the celebrations marking Her Majesty The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. The ways in which Canadians from coast to coast to coast marked that once-in-a-lifetime anniversary reinforced how important the monarchy is to our identity.
We understand and are proud of our history and our close ties, which have been strengthened by regular visits and contact between Canadians and members of the Royal Family.
I would also like to thank you for all that you have personally done for Canada.
You have visited this country on many occasions and have always represented The Queen respectfully and with aplomb.
And in addition to the honorary roles you hold within the Canadian Armed Forces, you have raised awareness for many worthy causes here in Canada.
You and I share a desire to support children and families. You have inspired so many with your actions, and have encouraged all of us to work for a fairer, more just society and a smarter, more caring world.
On a personal note, Sharon and I wish to thank you for the support you have offered to us from the very beginning of my mandate. You are a true friend to Canada, and we are delighted to have this opportunity to once again showcase what our country has to offer.
Welcome to Canada!
