Presentation Ceremony of the Legion of Honour
Rideau Hall, Monday, November 3, 2014
I would like to congratulate all of those who have been invested into the Legion of Honour today.
This year marks the 75th anniversary of the beginning of the Second World War, and it is only fitting that we recognize all of you for your service to Canada and to the world.
Your efforts helped to ensure that the Canada and France of today can exchange as similarly democratic and free societies. For that, we owe you a great debt of gratitude.
As Knights of the Legion of Honour, you join an international order that has been instrumental in creating a stronger, fairer and more just world.
As commander-in-chief, I am proud of our veterans and their service to Canada. I believe that this recognition of excellence is particularly meaningful as we begin Remembrance Week across Canada.
I am also grateful that we have so many young people with us today. You are learning of our duty to remember and to share our rich history with one another. And I encourage you to find your own giving moment to serve Canada in your own way.
Finally, let me thank you, Excellency, and your government for honouring these veterans and their efforts during the war.
Congratulations to all of you once again.
