Governor General of Canada to Welcome
the President of the French Republic in Banff and Ottawa
OTTAWA — Their Excellencies the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, and Mrs. Sharon Johnston will welcome His Excellency François Hollande, President of the French Republic, during his State visit to Canada, from November 2 to 4, 2014.
The visit will begin in Banff, Alberta, on November 2, 2014, where the Governor General will host an official welcoming ceremony and a State luncheon in honour of President Hollande. Prime Minister Stephen Harper will be in attendance.
On November 3, President Hollande will visit Rideau Hall, the official residence of the governor general of Canada, in Ottawa, Ontario. There, he will meet Their Excellencies, attend a working breakfast to discuss education, innovation and research collaboration, present the Legion of Honour to Canadian veterans of the Second World War, and plant a commemorative tree in honour of his visit.

An official welcoming ceremony, with military honours, will take place in the presence of the Governor General and the Prime Minister. President Hollande will review the guard of honour.

Working Breakfast Discussion on Education, Innovation and Research Collaboration
The Governor General and President Hollande will attend a working breakfast with members of the French delegation and Canadian representatives to discuss education, innovation and research collaboration. The discussion will take place with presidents of universities, and heads of academic, research and innovation organizations and associations.

Presentation Ceremony of the Legion of Honour
President Hollande will bestow the Legion of Honour, in the rank of Chevalier (knight), on six Canadian veterans of the Second World War who actively contributed to the liberation of Western Europe. Both President Hollande and the Governor General will deliver remarks on this occasion.
The Legion of Honour is France’s highest distinction and one of the world’s best known. For two centuries, it has been bestowed on behalf of the head of State to reward those citizens who are most deserving in all fields of endeavour. Instituted in 1802 by Napoleon Bonaparte, the Legion of Honour pays tribute to individuals who have distinguished themselves by outstanding military or civilian achievements. Ceremonial Tree Planting
President Hollande will plant a bitternut hickory (Carya cordiformis) on the Rideau Hall grounds. This tree was chosen to symbolize the enduringly strong, close diplomatic ties between Canada and France. It will be located near the tree planted by François Mitterrand, former president of France, during the last State visit to Canada by a French President, in 1987.
