From Space

Eddy and his Space Adventure

During a visit to the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) in December 2011, the Governor General introduced Eddy, Eduzone's mascot, to Canadian Astronaut Chris Hadfield via live video conference from NASA’s Johnson Space Center, in Houston, Texas.

On December 19, 2012, Eddy joined Chris Hadfield aboard the Russian Soyuz vehicle and journeyed into space to reach the International Space Station, as part of Expedition 34/35. During space missions, astronauts can bring with them a certain number of objects from various organizations.

His Excellency has chosen innovation and education as one of the three pillars of his mandate as governor general of Canada, and Chris Hadfield has spent much of his career as an astronaut speaking to students about the importance of pursuing their education. This is why Eddy was the perfect candidate to accompany him on this important mission; he represented education and learning through Eduzone.

Chris Hadfield

On January 30, 2013, the Governor General and 200 students from across the National Capital Region had the opportunity to speak with Chris Hadfield who had Eddy in tow, live from space. Watch the video of this unique discussion, which took place at the Canada Aviation and Space Museum.

"I had a great time on the International Space Station! Thanks for being a great teacher Commander Hadfield!" - Eddy

Eddy is now travelling across Canada on-board the It’s An Honour! mobile exhibit, alongside an inspiring hologram message from Chris Hadfield. The message is one of the exhibit’s many interactive features that introduce visitors to the Canadian Honours System, which recognizes people for extraordinary achievement, bravery, valour and service. Learn more about the travelling exhibit and find out when it will be coming to a community near you!

Following Chris Hadfield return to earth, the Governor General presented him with the Meritorious Service Cross (Civil Division) to mark his extraordinary achievements during his most recent mission to space, which brought great honour to Canada. He is the first Canadian to hold both the civil and military decorations of this honour. Read his citation and learn more about the Meritorious Service Cross (Civil Division).

On June 30, 2014, the Governor General announced that Chris Hadfield was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada for his commitment to promoting scientific discovery and for sharing the wonders of space exploration with the world.

Canadian astronauts Roberta Bondar, Marc Garneau, Julie Payette and Robert Thirsk have also been invested into the Order of Canada. The Order is the centrepiece of Canada’s honours system and recognizes a lifetime of outstanding achievement. For more information, visit gg.ca/honours.
