Eddy goes to space!
During a visit to the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) in December 2011, the Governor General presented Eddy, Eduzone's mascot, to Canadian Astronaut Chris Hadfield who was live from NASA's Joshnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, via video conference.
On December 19, 2012, Eddy joined Chris Hadfield aboard the Russian Soyuz vehicle and journeyed into space to reach the International Space Station as part of Expedition 34/35. During space missions, astronauts can bring with them a certain number of objects from various organizations.
His Excellency has chosen innovation and education as one of the three pillars of his mandate as governor general of Canada and Chris Hadfield has spent much of his career as an astronaut speaking to students about the importance of pursuing their education. This is why Eddy was the perfect candidate to accompany him on this important mission; he represented education and learning through Eduzone.
On January 30, 2013, the Governor General and 200 students from across the National Capital Region, had the opportunity to speak with our Canadian astronaut, who had Eddy in tow, live from space. Watch this unique discussion which took place at the Canada Aviation and Space Museum.
"I had a great time on the International Space Station! Thanks for being a great teacher Commander Hadfield!" - Eddy
Following his return to earth, the Governor General presented Commander Hadfield with the Meritorious Service Cross (Civil Division) to mark his extraordinary achievements during his most recent mission to space, which brought great honour to Canada. He is the first Canadian to hold both the civil and military decorations of this honour.
