Governor General to Lend a Hand at Yonge Street Mission Toy Market in Toronto
OTTAWA — His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada will volunteer at the Yonge Street Mission Christmas Toy Market at 11:15 a.m., on Friday, December 16, 2011. The market is being held at the H.B. Martin Family Centre for Urban Education, 306 Gerrard Street East, in Toronto.
The Governor General will get an operational overview of the Mission and will lend a hand at the Christmas Toy Market, an annual charity event for parents affected by poverty to choose free Christmas gifts for their children. His Excellency will meet with volunteers and help a community member select gifts for his or her family. The Governor General is taking this opportunity to emphasize the importance of community building through volunteering, in an effort to build a smarter and more caring nation.

The Yonge Street Mission has served the poor in Toronto for 115 years. The Christmas Toy and Food Market, which runs from Wednesday, December 14 through Friday, December 23, has brought joy to neighbourhood families living in poverty for over 20 years. For more information, visit www.ysm.ca.
