Governor General to Deliver Opening Address at the
Canadian Bar Association Canadian Legal Conference in Halifax

OTTAWA—His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, will deliver the opening address at the Canadian Bar Association (CBA) Canadian Legal Conference on Sunday, August 14, 2011. The event will take place at the World Trade and Convention Centre (Metro Centre B, Level 4), in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

At 1:20 p.m., His Excellency will speak about the significance of the rule of law in our constitutional monarchy, and the role that professionalism plays in a smart and caring nation, particularly as it relates to the legal profession. He will also focus on the key relationships that form the social contract between the legal profession and society.

Following the conference, at 6:15 p.m., His Excellency will visit HMCS Sackville, Canada’s oldest fighting warship and a symbol of national achievement during the Second World War. During his tour, the Governor General will meet with naval veterans and representatives of the Canadian Naval Memorial Trust, which is responsible for preserving and promoting the contributions made by Canada’s Navy. Media are invited for a photo opportunity upon the Governor General’s arrival at the Sackville Jetty.
