Governor General to Visit Calgary to Highlight National Volunteer Week

OTTAWA—His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, will be in Calgary on Thursday, April 14, 2011, to highlight remarkable work done by Canadians during National Volunteer Week.

National Volunteer Week pays tribute to the millions of Canadian volunteers who graciously donate their time and energy. This year’s National Volunteer Week takes place the week of April 10 to 16. It is Canada’s largest celebration of volunteers, volunteerism and civic participation. During the one-day visit to Calgary, the Governor General, patron of United Way of Canada, will deliver a keynote speech at the organization’s 2011 national conference. The conference theme, Momentum 2011: A Celebration of Community Action, is aimed at celebrating the growing momentum across Canada for building strong and inclusive communities that create a greater quality of life for everyone. The three-day conference facilitates networking, discussion and learning on major issues facing Canadian communities and the United Way of Canada Movement.

In addition, the Governor General will meet with members of Volunteer Calgary and will take the opportunity to congratulate the 12 recipients of Volunteer Calgary’s Leadership Awards that recognize outstanding contribution by volunteers in their communities. As Governor General and Commander-in-Chief of Canada, His Excellency will conclude his visit to Calgary with tour of The Military Museums.

Upon his arrival, the Governor General will be greeted by Volunteer Calgary’s acting CEO Sue Luciuk and board chair Dani DeBoice. During the meeting, His Excellency will say a few words and meet with outstanding volunteers from the Calgary area.

Volunteer Calgary has been helping people get involved in the community for over half a century. Its membership comprises over 450 voluntary organizations that need volunteers to complete their work. The Governor General, who is Patron of United Way of Canada, will deliver a keynote speech at the conference. His Excellency will speak on the importance of individuals and organizations contributing to stronger communities and better lives through philanthropy, volunteerism and insight.

Visit to The Military Museums
The Governor General will conclude his visit to Calgary with a visit to The Military Museums. Upon his arrival, His Excellency will be greeted by Tom Doucette, Executive Director of the Military Museums, who will accompany the Governor General during a tour of the exhibits and facilities. 

The Military Museums is home to the largest tri-service museum in Western Canada and is the second-largest military museum in Canada next to the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa. The Military Museums consist of seven distinct museums and galleries including the Naval, Army and Air Force Museums of Alberta, the four regimental army museums, and The Military Museums Library and Archives (University of Calgary), in addition to The Founders’ Gallery.
