Governor General’s Itinerary for the Republic of Haiti

OTTAWA—At the request of the prime minister of Canada, Stephen Harper, Her Excellency Michaëlle Jean, Governor General of Canada, accompanied by her husband, His Excellency Jean-Daniel Lafond, will visit the Republic of Haiti and the Dominican Republic, from March 8 to 10, 2010. 

The visit to the Republic of Haiti is being made to strengthen the partnership between Canada and Haiti, for the restoration and reconstruction of the country following the earthquake on January 12, 2010.

The delegation accompanying Their Excellencies will consist of: Gerald Tremblay, Mayor of Montreal, a member of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, vice president of the North America of United Cities and Local Governments organization and vice president of the Association Internationale des Maires Francophones (AIMF); Denyse Côté, professor and researcher at the Université du Québec en Outaouais and director of the Observatoire sur le développement régional et l'analyse différenciée selon les sexes (ORÉGAND); and Mireille Mathieu, vice-rector for International Relations at the Université de Montréal and designated vice-rector for the AUF (Agence universitaire de la francophonie).

Upon arrival, Their Excellencies will be welcomed by René Préval, President of the Republic of Haiti as well as Gilles Rivard, Canada's Ambassador to the Republic of Haiti.

Their Excellencies will be welcomed by Minister Marjorie Michel.  There will be a short ceremony in memory of the victims of the earthquake.

Their Excellencies will take part in a ceremony at the premises of the National Coalition for Women’s Rights Advocacy (CONAP).

Lunch and round table on the occasion of International Women’s Day

Their Excellencies will take part in a discussion with female community leaders from civil society to address the various issues Haiti is facing. The Canadian delegate, Denyse Côté, professor and researcher at the Université du Québec en Outaouais, and director of the Observatoire sur le développement régional et l'analyse différenciée selon les sexes (ORÉGAND), will take part in the event.

Léogâne

Meeting with the mayor and visit to the city of Léogâne

Their Excellencies will be welcomed at City Hall by His Worship Santos Alexis, Mayor of Léogâne, before visiting various sites where Canada and the Canadian Forces are providing humanitarian aid. The Governor General and her husband will meet with victims of the earthquake in the camp for displaced persons in front of City Hall.

Official welcome and meeting with the Mayor of Jacmel

Their Excellencies will be welcomed by His Worship Yvon Jerome, Mayor of Jacmel, and will then discuss the effects the earthquake has had on the city and its citizens.

Their Excellencies will visit the Embassy of Canada and meet with the staff. The Governor General will make brief remarks.

Their Excellencies will discuss the importance of education to reconstruction and long-term development in Haiti.
