Governor General Visits Two Neighbourhoods Revitalized by the Fundación Costa Rica-Canadá
OTTAWA—On the final day of the State visit to the Republic of Costa Rica, Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, Governor General of Canada, toured revitalization projects in two San José neighbourhoods. The projects are managed by the Fundación Costa Rica-Canadá.
The Governor General toured the Los Guido neighbourhood to meet with representatives of the foundation, and to recognize the remarkable work they have been doing for over 20 years, providing sustainable housing to the most disadvantaged residents in the community.
“Decent housing is essential for a society to function properly,” stated the Governor General. “We admire Costa Rica's commitment to providing housing that is accessible to citizens, as reflected in the work of the foundation. This is a genuine success story of our bilateral co-operation.”
The Fundación Costa Rica-Canadá was created in 1988, when a rural housing program, funded through a $10 million contribution from the Canadian International Development Agency, was transformed into a foundation dedicated to the country’s rural development. The foundation has kept its commitment from the outset by funding the construction of houses for low-income Costa Ricans. Thanks to the program, over 35 000 families and some 200 000 Costa Ricans have benefited from sustainable housing since 1988.
In addition, His Excellency Jean-Daniel Lafond participated at an Art Matters forum with representatives of Costa Rica’s film and cultural sectors. They discussed the power of influence of the documentary. The Governor General ended the State visit with a Youth Dialogue on the theme of building hope and opportunity: youth developing solutions to local and global challenges.
