 Their Excellencies to host an Art Matters forum on “How is your writing 'Canadian'?”
and honour the 2009 laureates of the Literary Awards

OTTAWA—Their Excellencies the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, Governor General of Canada, and Mr. Jean-Daniel Lafond will host an Art Matters forum on the following theme: “How is your writing Canadian?”. This forum will take place on Wednesday, November 25, 2009, at 7:00 p.m. at Rideau Hall. The following day (Thursday, November 26) Her Excellency will present the 2009 Governor General’s Literary Awards during a ceremony at Rideau Hall, at 6 p.m.

Art Matters forum on “How is your writing 'Canadian'?” – November 25, 7:00 p.m.
Two panellists will open the discussion: Serge Bouchard, anthropologist and author, as well as Noah Richler, journalist and author. The public will then be invited to share their comments and observations on the theme.

To reserve a seat, members of the public must send their contact information (name, occupation, address, telephone number) via e-mail to before Friday, November 20, 2009. Seating is limited.

This forum is organized on the occasion of the presentation of the 2009 Governor General’s Literary Awards in collaboration with the Canada Council for the Arts.

Governor General’s Literary Awards Ceremony – November 26, 6:00 p.m.
Her Excellency will honour this year’s laureates of the Governor General’s Literary Awards in the English and French categories of fiction, non-fiction, poetry, drama, children’s literature (text and illustration) and translation. The ceremony will be held at Rideau Hall.

The Canada Council for the Arts presents the 73rd edition of the Governor General’s Literary Awards, Canada’s oldest and most prestigious awards for English- and French-language Canadian literature. The names of this year’s winners are available on the Canada Council for the Arts Web site at
