Governor General concludes her State visit to Croatia
by emphasizing the importance of reconciliation
OTTAWA—Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, Governor General of Canada, concluded today her five-day State visit to Croatia by visiting a secondary school in Vukovar, with His Excellency Stjepan Mesić, President of the Republic of Croatia.
The Governor General met with the students of the Vukovar Gymnasium School and discussed the importance of education as well as the essential process of reconciliation after a conflict. “I know that memories of conflicts are still alive in this area of the world. I know how difficult it is to forget the wounds of the past. But I also know that healing comes from our ability to recognize and transcend our pain and losses. I know that what is at stake is our commitment to ensuring that the forces of solidarity and creation triumph over the forces of exclusion and destruction. Your school must be a place of hope and possibility. Because in this school, you are together,” the Governor General said.
During her visit, the Governor General held meetings with His Excellency Stjepan Mesić, President of the Republic of Croatia and with Her Excellency Jadranka Kosor, Prime Minister of the Republic of Croatia. At the University of Dubrovnik, the Governor General participated in a panel discussion on the theme of preserving culture and heritage in an open society. At an Art Matters forum held in collaboration with the Zagreb Film Festival, Her Excellency touched on the role of documentaries in our society. She also took part in a dialogue with prominent Croatian women to acknowledge the participation of women in civil life.
The Governor General and His Excellency Jean-Daniel Lafond will undertake a State visit to the Hellenic Republic from October 29 to 31. They will attend, among other official activities, the Olympic Flame Handover Ceremony at the Panathenaic Stadium in Athens, on October 29.
